The Spanish skater Javier Fernandez won his 7th gold of the European Championships (271.59). Alexander Samarin from Russia landed on the second place (269.84), and the bronze medal went to Italian skater Matteo Rizzo (247.08), surprisingly and also unexpectedly even for himself.
Mikhail Kolyada, who was the leader after the Short program, couldn’t not cope with nerves as the majority from the strongest warm-up group and took the 5th position (240.87).
Javier has now the same number of European titles as Evgeni Plushenko. This championship is the last one in the brilliant career of the outstanding Spanish skater.
«Seven years ago, I did not suspect that I would win the 2019 European
Championship. Just glad that all this happened in my life. I am sad because
I have been training and performing for 21 years. Now it is time to leave,
to complete a career. But at the same time, I am happy that I had a good
career and I was able to achieve more than I could have imagined, - the
seven-time European champion shared with the press and added: - Every figure
skater has the opportunity to show himself and tell his story, regardless
, where are you from. I hope that I have added my name to the history of
figure skating and the history of Spain».
«I tried to disconnect from everything that was happening around me. Yes,
not everything worked out, but I am glad that I pleased my team. If someone
had told me that everything would be like this, I would not have believed
it. When I was young, I watched Javier perform. I am glad that he was able
to leave beautifully like champion. I am glad that I was able to beat his
nerves a little»,- said the silver medalist.
